Ingredients for Mummy Brownies
*Please check out the recipe card at the end of this blog post for the full recipe and amounts for each ingredient.
The most important ingredients to make these Healthy Mummy Brownies are fresh and ripe Avocado. I’ve got a couple of details on which other ingredients you will need to make this dish and the other ingredients and its substitute that are good for you and your kids’ diet. Here is what you need:
For Avocado Brownies:
- Avocado – Avocados contain quite a bit of potassium, dietary fiber, and healthy fats. Make sure you use a ripe avocado for this recipe. If the avocado yields to firm gentle pressure you know it’s ripe and ready to eat. Do NOT use overripe past ripe avocado which is a mushy or dented outer skin or has a rancid smell. These are not good for our kids.
- Coconut oil – I love using coconut oil when making baked goods. However, make sure you choose brands with a virgin or extra virgin label over refined coconut oil which is added chemicals to remove the aroma. It is not good for our kids. If you are not a fan of coconut and coconut oil, you can use avocado oil or any vegetable oils that you preferred.
- Coconut milk – You can easy to buy Coconut milk in the grocery stores or make your Homemade Coconut Milk. The homemade version is always fresh and is fresh and tastes delicious! If you don’t like coconut milk, you can add almond milk or oat milk with the same amount of coconut milk in my recipe card below.
- Flour – you can use plain flour, ground almond, or whole wheat flour to make these vegan brownies.
- Cocoa powder – use unsweetened cocoa powder
- Honey – Honey will bring a lot of good nutrition to the brownies. That’s why I use honey instead of refined sugar. You can also use coconut sugar or maple syrup. Remember to increase the amount of coconut sugar for your tastes.
- Baking powder
- Salt
- Vanilla Extract (optional)
- Nut or chocolate chips (optional) – you can add some nuts or chocolate chips if your kids love them.
For Topping:
- Cream cheese – you can use Vegan Cream Cheese or the original ones if you prefer.
- Non-dairy milk – I used coconut milk because it contains good fat for my kid. You can substitute with almond milk or oat milk if you want to keep this recipe completely vegan.
- Icing sugar (optional) – to make cream cheese frosting, icing sugar will bring up the flavor. However, the brownie in this recipe already has a perfectly sweet taste from honey so I did not add icing sugar to make the frosting. Less sugar added to the kids’ food will be better for their health
- Googly eyes – I want to make completely Vegan Halloween Brownies for my daughter so I’ve made Homemade Vegan Googly Eyes with no eggs and no dairy. You can check the recipe here! However, if you want something fast and convenient, you can buy the Candy Eyeballs, which are available on Amazon.
Important Nutrition Notes for Babies and Toddlers
1. HONEY
Honey has been suggested to have several nutritional benefits that our babies can enjoy after they reach 12 months of age. Read more about The benefits of honey and how to introduce it to your babies here!
2. CHOCOLATE & COCOA POWDER
Although chocolate and cocoa powder are delicious to eat and make baked recipes, it is NOT recommended for babies under two years of age as it contains refined sugars and caffeine, which could have negative effects on your babies.
3. COCONUT
The fats in organic coconut oil and coconut milk are considered good fat for grown-ups and even babies who reach over 1 year of age.
When purchasing coconut oil, choose brands with a virgin or extra virgin label over refined coconut oil, which is treated with chemicals to remove the aroma—a process that adds potentially carcinogenic substances and eliminates much of the antioxidant benefits.
Now that’s everything you need, let’s go straight ahead to make our delicious Spooky Mummy Brownies!

How to make Halloween Mummy Brownies
Brownies and cream cheese frosting is always the best combination for me… yummmm!! So I used vegan cream cheese to make the topping. If you are not vegan, you can use the original cream cheese. It also works well with this recipe.
Step 1. Mix well cream cheese and milk until smooth. If your frosting is too thick, don’t worry… you can add 1 or 2 tbsp more of milk to make it smoother and easy to put in the piping bags.
Note: You can add 2 to 3 tbsp of icing sugar in this cream cheese frosting to bring up the flavor of your topping. Personally, I don’t want my little daughter to eat too much sweet form sugar so I did not add it.
Step 2. Transfer the cream cheese frosting to a piping bag, close it, and cut off the corner (you can also use a small plastic baggie)
Step 3. Drizzle the cream cheese frosting across the brownie, back and forth. Then place two Googly Eyes toward the top of each brownie.
Step 4. Enjoy!

Pro Tips
Here, you can follow all of my tips to make this recipe perfectly every time!
- Baking tips: Do not open the oven when the cake is baking. In addition, make sure you let the brownie cool in the pan before cutting and adding the toppings. The brownie can be a little fragile when still warm.
- Want a lower sugar variation? you can reduce the amount of honey (or maple syrup) to 1/4 cup (60ml). My daughter happily ate the brownie at this sugar level.
- Avocado tips: Make sure you use a ripe avocado for this recipe. If the avocado yields to firm gentle pressure you know it’s ripe and ready to eat.
- Don’t like Cream Cheese Frosting? Using white candy melts or white chocolate chips instead to make the mummy bandages also works well. All are delicious!
- For this recipe, we used an 8×5.5 inch pan to make 9 Mummy Brownies. If you want more mummies, you can double the batch or use a mix/recipe that yields more.
