*Please check out the recipe card at the end of this blog post for the full recipe and amounts for each ingredient.
- Beef Chuck Steak (or Sirloin Steak)
- Vegetable Oil
- Lemongrass – fresh or frozen chopped lemongrass both work well in this recipe. You can find lemongrass in any Asian Grocery near your place.
- Shallot or onion
- Soy Sauce – bring out the meat’s flavor and also tenderizes it. You could use all-purpose or light soy sauce. Do not use dark or sweet soy sauce.
- Fresh Garlic – You could use garlic powder if you don’t have a fresh one in hand. However, the fresh garlic will bring a better flavor to your beef skewers.
- Chinese 5 Spice Powder – You can find it in any Asian Grocery near your place or available on Amazon.
- Sugar – use any sugar or sweetener that you are preferred
- Salt – optional, your taste
- Oyster Sauce (optional)
- Ground Black Pepper (optional)
- Fresh Veggies – My family loves to eat these Beef Skewers with capsicums, but there’s plenty of other vegetables that could be used such as mushrooms, red onion, garlic, and zucchini.

Commonly Questions
Grill
When it comes to the grilling method, you need to prepare your grill by heating the grill with a light coating of spray oil, set high heat. Once hot, add the skewers, reduce heat to medium to make sure the chicken is cooked through. Grill for around 8 to 10 minutes on each side, or until cooked through as your desired liking.
Oven
Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C) and place the skewers on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Cook them for 15-20minutes, turning halfway through, or until the meat is done to your desired liking. However, you should keep a close eye on your steak. The time to cook it depends on the size and shape of your meat. If your beef cubes are thick and big, your skewers need longer to cook than thin and small ones.
Stovetop
You will need a little extra oil, around 1 tbsp, to ensure it does not stick to the pan, and set the medium heat to make sure your meat is cooked through on both sides.
You can make this lemongrass marinade ahead of time to save your time. Just make sure you store it in the clean jar in the refrigerator for 2 weeks or freezer for up to 3 months. Before marinating the meat, you need to thaw overnight in the refrigerator, then bring it to room temperature.
Here are some side dishes that go beautifully with these Lemongrass Beef Skewers:
– Serve it over steamed jasmine rice or brown rice for a complete dinner.
– You can serve it with rice vermicelli together with plenty of fresh vegetables such as lettuce, shredded carrot, cucumber, and coriander.
– Add Lemongrass Beef to the baguette with some fresh veggies like cucumber, lettuce, and coriander…is perfect for your lunch or snack as well.
Pro Tips for Perfect Lemongrass Beef
- You can use wooden or metal skewers. If you use metal skewers, they’re quite hot and they remain their heat after cooking longer than wooden skewers. So be careful when you eat, try not to burn yourself. If you prefer to use wooden skewers, soak them in water for an hour before using them. It will help to prevent them from burning during cooking at a high temperature.
- Try to keep the size of the pieces of beef even as possible so they all cook evenly.
- Marinate steak for at least 3 hours or overnight to allow flavors to soak into the beef.
- I’ve used red and green capsicums, but there’s plenty of other vegetables you could use such as mushrooms, red onion, garlic, and zucchini.
- Cooking time depends on your oven or grill model, the size of your steak cubes, and the weather so just keep an eye on them while cooking to make sure your steak won’t be overcooked.
